Gary is a simple chip that handles some smaller I/O tasks.

Although it's housed in the same 48-pin DIP as Denise and Paula, the actual chip is a lot smaller. There are just a few hundred components on the entire chip.

It also has alignment markers and test circuits.

Like the other custom chips, Gary is made with only one layer of metal. If two wires have to cross each other, then one has to be made from polysilicon (the darker wires in this picture). However, poly has a much higher resistivity than metal, so metal is always used wherever possible. That's why the three L-shaped lines in the centre of this picture are made from metal, rather than the whole wire being made out of poly.

For some reason there's an unused bondpad at the top of the IC.
